If guidelines are too strict it could cause a few problems. You can't prevent l33tDood from being created unless you are to prevent ravyo1 from being created for example (by not allowing numbers) or someone else's favorite name that happens to have a number in the middle (by not allowing numbers in the middle).

Naming rules that prevent the game from being full of private parts running around is enough in my opinion because any further restrictions would pose more problems than they are put to solve, and you are still going to get names like iPwnUrMama no matter how strict the naming filter is.

I remember a game where you couldn't create names with 2 consecutive constants (or more than 2 consecutive vowels, or more than 2 numbers and many other rules for that matter) to make it harder for bots to create random names. It ended up hindering the players because all the bot owners had to do is edit their naming script with new rules, and players wanting names with Mc or Mr ended up taking the blow.

I personally don't mind playing with a l33tDood if they're fun to be around, as long as the name doesn't sound offensive to me. I find it hard to be judgmental about something that is supposed to be a personal choice. I think the several ignore options are enough to customize the experience for every player without hindering the rest.

I bet most players feel this way too. There are a lot of people who are great fun to play with but pick the worst names or at least names I would never come up with.

Is it shallow to ignore someone based solely on their name choice? I don't know. Chances are good that if iPwnUrMama wants to group up it won't turn out well. Either way it's good that the devs are giving us a lot of options with the ignore list and letting us take responsibility for who we're playing with.

Being an older player, I find that when I play online games, I eschew the player names like L33TDood or 69XXX69 and such nonsense. I have played games that had players with porn stars names and actually refused to group with them. When I was asked what "my problem" was, I told them I didn't care for their characters name. Of course I was the bad guy for actually wanting to be immersed in my gameplay and not see pornstars names.
Which brings me to my point,I hope there are some sensible character naming guidelines in CoS.

I am absolutely the same way. I will absolutely blacklist anyone with an incompetent name.

Go to Behind The Name, and look for names there. Hell, Google is your friend here as well.
