So is this what practice/study points can do? Can you master an abliity to the point where the magicallness does not affect you companions?

Practice and Study points improve an Ability. The nature of those improvements are based on the Ability, so there is no simple rule.

Please note, posts that went off topic were moved to the Ratskeller / Magic nonsense.

The same works for legendary difficulty on Skyrim.
You HAVE to keep changing between all combinations, Heavy armour and shield + magic, Cloth + magic, bow till they come in range, then switch to mace n shield, hell you need to run from most things. You name it, there was a time it was needed. Whenever someone offers assistance, accept it!
I did notice the shield was a very good friend of mine lol.

Though you CAN switch roles during a battle (and will need to if you are solo, or in a very small group), you don't always have to. You will want to come up with strategies based on the situation. Sometimes it is beneficial to put some warriors up front in good armor, with ranged attackers behind them (or behind physical cover).

But there are other times when you want to go all ranged, like if you have the high ground and your enemies must work their way up to your position. Of course, once they finally get there (hopefully very wounded or even reduced in numbers) you may then all wish to switch to melee for the up close stuff. Or course, if the way up is narrow, then you can plug it with a couple melee people, and let the others continue to pick them off from the sides with ranged.

The point is, depending on the situation (opponent: numbers, intelligence, type as well as the terrain), each of you may need to pick a role, or have multiple roles. I've only mentioned melee and ranged in these examples, but there is also stealth and sneak attacks and healing, but again, depending on the situation you may be called to do any of these roles.

Everyone will want to have at least some capability in all of these, though you can certainly specialize a little as well.

Looking back, the OP asked these questions:

Firstly, is there any limit to the numer of spells you can cast? If so, can you tell us what it is?
Answered above.

Secondly, how do players learn new spells? Is it in a similair way to finding new abilities in that we have to search out ancient tomes? or do we just learn them with levelling?

Let me expand on the answer for this one: You first decide an Ability you wish to learn. Then you have to join the League to which it belongs (if you aren't already a member). They will tell you a region of the world where a Tome of Knowledge for this Ability may be located.

Then you go on an Adventure/Quest, though you aren't going on a story to find this Ability, you will be on whatever story you are currently doing, but somewhere along the way in that story, you are now likely to find this tome. Think of is as targeted drops. Instead of waiting for a random drop (with 1890 this might take forever!) the game will make sure you find the one you are seeking at some point, probably in one of the more difficult treasures to procure (risk vs. reward is important to us).

Now that you have the Tome of Knowledge that teaches that Ability you may Study it. This is done via using Study Tokens you earn as you go up levels. Once you have applied at least one Study Token, you can start using the Ability, though it will be in a beginner kind of state. The more Study Points you apply, the better you will get at it. However, if you keep using it, you may earn one Practice point added to this Ability per level you go up.

Finally, is there any system for Player-Created spells. I imagine there won't be simply because of the huge space needed to store the information, but it is interesting to know.
Answered above, but to reiterate, with 1890 (plus Uber Abilities) there are more then enough to learn already. We don't believe that players will ever get all of them to any significant power, there just isn't enough time (even figuring in real years of play).
